IT'S SEPTEMBER, TIME TO PICK YOUR OWN APPLES

I could not wait for the orchards to open up their fields so that I could take my son's apple picking. It was my youngest son’s first time. Well, we went despite the fact that it was 90 degrees out, despite the fact that we had to drive 1.5 hours. 1.5 hours to pick some apples??? I forgot that I live in NC now; it can take an hour to get anywhere! Despite the fact that it was almost nap time and I wasn't too excited about the drive...off we went! I WANT TO PICK APPLES TODAY!

Picking your own apples

Through the fields we went. I pulled this heavy wagon up & down the orchard. What was I thinking? It rolled when we got near hills, it ran over my feet, and it was SO HOT. I needed somewhere to place the camera, water bottles, snacks, purse, & my 2 year old.

They gave us some tool to pull down the apples that were too high. The only problem was that my husband had to work & my 8 year old wanted to be in charge of the tool. This was an issue because it became a weapon. As we walked down the paved orchard road he almost knocked out at least 5 people. I had a 2 year old bouncing around a wooden wagon and an 8 year old swinging some tool around….ugh.

“Pull me mommy”
“Faster”
“Go”

Breathe mama just breathe! It doesn’t matter if your kids are already complaining. It doesn’t matter that your oldest son is knocking people out with an apple picking tool. It doesn’t matter that your 2 year old is yelling at you. We’re here to have fun, so just breathe.

Well, you have a recipe below so you know that we ALL survived. We made it home with two large bags of apples and two sleepy kids. I did not cook that night, we stopped at a restaurant close to home. Reason being I was setting up bedtime. Drive. Apple Picking. Drive. Dinner. Bath. Bed.

*This is a chunky applesauce so if you like it thinner you can add 1C of Apple Cider & use an immersion blender to thin out.
*Adjust sweetness to your families taste.

After our long adventure, the kids had a great time. It is something that we don’t do often so it was a perfect activity for them. After the exhaustion subsided I had a great time as well. If you plan accordingly, apple picking is a great activity for the entire family. I also love showing the kids where our food comes from. Throughout the years this has encouraged them to try foods they may not have.

Apple Picking with Family

You know what? For the next week, they can eat applesauce, apple cider donuts, apple pie, apple cake, APPLES!

What does your family like to pick? How did it go?

WHY I STOPPED MAKING MY BED & SO SHOULD YOU

The very first chore for many of us (including my oldest son) is currently being frowned upon by many scientists. Yes, every one of our mother’s & grandmother’s will cringe when they hear what I am about to say. But, I am going to say it anyway.

Why you shouldn't make your bed....Dust Mites

STOP MAKING YOUR BED!! LIKE TODAY!!!

Here’s why:

DUST MITES (Dermatophagoides farinae)

Dust mites thrive off our dead skin cells and sweat.  So the new theories believe that if we leave our beds unmade these little microscopic buggies will dry up and die off.  The average bed can host up to or more than 1.5 million of these guys.

Besides our bed sheets, they also live in mattresses, upholstered furniture, carpets & curtains.

They do not bite, but the enzymes in dust mite feces (poop) can harm or kill delicate cells within our bodies. Their droppings are full of allergens that some are highly sensitive too. For most this isn’t an issue. If you are experiencing any allergic symptoms then they may be an issue for you.

Symptoms/Diseases They Cause

  • Asthma
  • Eczema
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)-Need a home remedy (click here)
  • Urticaria (hives)
  • Runny Nose
  • Sneezing
  • Nasal Congestion

I won’t gross anyone out by showing those horrid images of dust mites…..YUCK. Just in case you can't resist the urge (Click Here) I hate pictures of bugs!!! Especially microscopic creepy crawlies that can potentially make us sick.

Now that I got you good & itchy. Here is a list of ways to reduce your exposure. Dust Mites can never be eliminated, but can be reduced.

Reducing Exposure

  • Wash Sheets in very hot water at least every 2 weeks
  • Let bed air out daily after sleep by pulling the sheets back
  • Purchase dust mite pillow case & mattress covers
  • Vacuuming mattress with a HEPA Filter Vacuum will help reduce them
  • Wash Children’s Stuffed Animals in Hot Water with Bedding
  • Clean Weekly
  • Keep House Temperature at/or Below 70 degrees & Humidity Below 50%
  • Having Wood Floors is also an Advantage
  • Let The Sunlight In

How do you Reduce your exposure to Dust Mites?

The Number One Thing You Must Do this Long Weekend

So I was supposed to be doing something completely different tonight, like sleep.  I felt compelled to encourage some mom’s to do a little self-care this weekend.  Do something quick!  If you have more time, check out my previous post (HERE& choose 1, 2 or 3 things to do. These are just some quick suggestions to go do when Dad or whom ever is available to take the kids. On a day of your choice, possibly this weekend though.

Finish your daily activities. Have dinner cooked, don’t cook, order out, or …..whatever. When Dad comes in, greet him, & say "I am taking a break".

I.WON'T. BE.TOO. LONG.!!!!  You’ll tell Dad. So what if we lie a little, the kids won't find out. Then run upstairs.

Do you need to pluck, tweeze or wax your eyebrows? Do it now!

Do you need a hot bath without intruders? Do it now!

Do you need to paint your toenails? Do it now!

Do you need a facial? Do it now!

Do you need to blow dry or flat iron your hair? Yes, I do!

Do you need to close the door & turn up YOUR music? Do it!

Do you need to shave in places that you can’t with your 2 yr. old there? Please do so now!

Do you need to get back to a pin from 2 weeks ago? Do it now!

Do you want to put on some makeup? Do it now, but remember you'll be washing it off very soon because it's probably close to bed time.

Do you want to put on that Charcoal face mask that you grabbed at Walmart for $2.50, without babies & kids looking at you screaming “Where did mommy go?” I DO & I AM!

Do you want to read a magazine? Of course, books went out the window years ago.

Do you want to sneak and eat a candy bar? I might.

Ahhh, now we’re relaxed & ready for tomorrow.

Don't fall asleep.

Oh wait………….

The kids are calling, dad is calling, & the puppy is calling! Puppy, yes (she’s our newest addition) that story will be continued in a later post. Read about her here......

This was just a quick reminder to do a few things that you skimped out on while being home with the kids all summer. You know what I will be doing & if you participate, let me know below.

Have fun Mama’s!

Slow Cooker BBQ Ribs

It’s HOT, do you hear me? HOT outside! We are going on our 36th day of temperatures in the high 90’s. I was getting dressed to take my son mto the library. I pulled out my makeup case and went to put on my makeup, but my face was SOAKED because I ran out to the car for 1 second to grab some things. I think I may have an extra set of pores or something.  No one should sweat like that! That fast!

Enough talk about my pores & all. So where did the summer go? I walked into Target & I couldn’t even believe the gardening supplies were non-existent, and had been replaced by book bags, calculators, markers & crayons.

Since we’re SUDDENLY in back to school mode, who has time to cook? Who has time to cook in the summer? Who has time to cook at all??

Here is a quick slow cooker recipe that can cook all day, while you’re still scratching your head wondering where summer went & you get to say you cooked dinner.
